1832

Americus Founded

Americus was founded in 1832 and named after the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci — the same man the Americas were named after. It became the county seat of Sumter County shortly after.

1854

The Windsor Hotel Opens

The iconic Windsor Hotel was built in downtown Americus and remains one of the finest Victorian-era hotels in the South. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places and still operates today.

1861–1865

Civil War & Andersonville

During the Civil War, nearby Andersonville (just 10 miles from Americus) was home to Camp Sumter, the largest Confederate military prison. Today it's preserved as Andersonville National Historic Site.

Lindbergh's Connection

Souther Field in Americus served as a military training base where Charles Lindbergh — who would later make the first solo transatlantic flight — learned to fly in the 1920s.
