Why Homemade Vanilla Extract Is Worth the Wait (And How We Make Ours)

Madagascar beans, Georgia vodka, and 12 months of patience — from our homestead in Americus, GA.

The first time I opened a bottle of our homemade vanilla extract after 12 months of aging, I just stood there for a moment. The smell was so deep, so warm, so completely different from anything I'd ever bought at the grocery store.

That's the thing about real vanilla extract — the kind made with actual vanilla beans and quality alcohol, aged long enough to develop complexity. It's not even in the same category as the imitation stuff.

Why we make our own vanilla extract

We started making vanilla extract for the same reason we make most things here at Mother's Love Homestead: because we wanted to know exactly what was in it, and because we wanted the best possible version of the thing.

Store-bought vanilla extract is often made with lower-grade beans, minimal aging time, and sometimes additives. Imitation vanilla doesn't even contain real vanilla — it's synthesized from wood pulp byproducts.

Our vanilla is made with Madagascar Grade A vanilla beans — the gold standard for flavor — and 13th Colony vodka, distilled right here in Georgia.

Our process

  1. Split the vanilla beans lengthwise to expose the seeds
  2. Place 12 beans per bottle in a clean glass bottle
  3. Fill with 13th Colony vodka
  4. Seal and store in a cool, dark place
  5. Shake gently once a week
  6. Wait 12 months — patience is the secret ingredient

The result is a rich, deeply flavored extract with a beautiful dark amber color and a complex aroma that makes your baked goods taste like they came from a professional kitchen.

FAQ

Why does homemade vanilla extract taste better?

Quality beans, real alcohol, and proper aging time. Most commercial extracts are made quickly and with lower-grade ingredients. Aging for 12 months allows the flavor compounds to fully develop.

Is it shelf stable?

Yes — vanilla extract lasts indefinitely when stored properly (cool, dark place, sealed bottle). It actually improves with age.

Do you ship?

Yes — our Etsy orders typically ship in 1–4 days.

Ready to taste the difference?

Our vanilla extract is available in 8oz and 2oz bottles — ships daily from our homestead to yours.
